Then Trev sits down for Part 1 of his conversation with actor Chin Han (Independence Day: Resurgence, The Dark Night, Contagion, Marco Polo) to discuss his very unlikely – and synchronous – journey from Singaporean economics student, to regional theatre and TV stardom, to regular working Hollywood actor with some of the industry’s biggest names. Fear, self-doubt, trusting that we’re enough – it all plays a role, because it’s all part of the process.
“Getting the job is very different from doing the job.”
You’ve seen actor Chin Han before – you just didn’t know it.
And he’s got some pretty cool stories.
As a kid in Singapore, he was mesmerized by films and television. He went through the motions all the kids in his community did – studying economics and linguistics at an institution that’s known for churning out doctors, lawyers, scientists, and members of parliament – but nursed his love for theatre on the side.
After 6 years of long days, late nights, lots of hard work, and more than a few tyrannical directors, he’d worked his way up to regular gigs in regional theatre, figuring this was about as good as it’d get.
Enter: one of those nationwide casting calls – a thing for Citibank. He goes, he books the part, and suddenly his picture is on billboards, on the sides of buses, and on TV sets all over the country. Local TV stations bring him in for roles, and soon he’s auditioning directly for Christopher Nolan.
He’s been working in Hollywood ever since.
But it almost didn’t happen. Every success he’s had in Hollywood, he traces back to one, single, decisive moment: to book a flight to the United States for an audition. Did he ‘need’ to? No – casting had his tape already. But something in his gut said go for it.
And it changed everything.
Part 1 of my conversation with Chin Han is, like many others, about trust: trusting that doubt is part of the process, trusting that presence is enough, and how it all – geek alert – is a lot like competitive swimming that way.
Hope you dig it.
