In Episode 274, Trev and AJ discuss the emotional and spiritual benefits (and hurdles) of full-time ‘thrival’ job work. Then AJ sits down for Part 1 of his chat with actress and SAG-AFTRA president Gabrielle Carteris to talk about juggling career and governing responsibilities, the life-changing event that eventually sparked her deeper involvement with the Union, and the brave new world facing actors and filmmakers today: film, TV shows, and more are being made everywhere…
Maybe you’ve never really thought much about SAG-AFTRA—our industry’s performer’s union. (I know I’ve been guilty of it.) Maybe you’ve yet to join the union, and see no reason to be in any rush. There’s plenty of non-union work available, right?
Well, yes. And non-union work can be a great teacher. But if you want to pursue a career in entertainment professionally, joining your union should be a top priority. Not only do union members get to stand proudly on the shoulders of all those who have fought for fair rights, pay, and treatment before them, but it also shows the world—and your peers in casting and production—that you’re in this to win this.
Beyond that, you have a chance to shape the future of this industry in very specific and powerful ways, by taking advantage of the vast resources your union membership offers, and by taking part in panels, workshops, discussions, votes, demonstrations, and more.
Years ago, Gabrielle was just an actress who wanted to work. After a freak accident on set left her partially paralyzed—and her union supported her in getting the compensation, support, and treatment she needed and deserved—she got more and more involved… eventually, after the untimely passing of the late Ken Howard, leading the national effort for actors all across the country, as President.
Part 1 of AJ’s chat with Gabrielle is as much about her life philosophy as it is about her journey. A true and staunch believer in people over profit, paying it forward, and embracing change, this is a conversation about the long game of professional storytelling. We’re extremely honored and proud to have had the opportunity to sit down with Gabrielle—and to share the exchange with you, here.
We truly hope you enjoy it.
Suffering is optional,
