In Episode 288, a thank you and clarification from Trev, and AJ phones home from the trail. Then, the second and final part of a unique casting director roundtable interview with L.A.-based casting directors Allen Hooper, Caroline Liem, and Jane Jenkins.
To say that this paid casting director workshops—and especially all the legal developments as of late—is a divisive issue is an understatement. Last episode sparked a vocal reaction from some listeners, and, personally, we think that’s awesome. It says to us that people are invested in the industry in a context of generosity and community. It can, however, also often stir up emotions.
Next episode, we’ll be reading a short rebuttal from a very respected and much-loved past guest—and then, we’re going to move on.
Our aim with the podcast has always been to empower and inform the community, not to take sides. It’s not always easy, but we strive to maintain an unbiased approach with our interviews, especially when it comes to sensitive and divisive legal or political issues. We’re not perfect, but we hope that our “coverage” (for lack of a better term) and interviews about this particular issue has been worthy of that aim: our aim to empower and inform.
We always welcome your e-mails, your voice memos and messages, your tweets, your thoughts, everything. We do consciously avoid flame wars and anything that devolves into name-calling or shaming—that’s not our style—but we welcome intelligent discussion of anything and everything we talk about here on the show.
There’s a lot more interesting stuff here in the second part of our roundtable interview. The panel discussion digs further into the ever-evolving legal side of the casting workshop issue, the motivation—and mission—behind Caroline, Allen, and Jane’s choice to facilitate their own workshops, more details and nuances surrounding the city’s workshop investigation and the charges being brought, and perhaps a different way to frame what workshops are and can accomplish for actors.
We hope this exchange inspires you, informs you, and piques your curiosity the way it has for us.
Follow your gut,
